COLDEX’s second field season is underway!

Week of November 13, 2023

By Peter Neff

The COLDEX I-187 Allan Hills team has spent the last 10 days or so working through the required trainings in McMurdo Station that then allow them to move on to establishing the shallow ice core drilling camp at Allan Hills. Antarctic field safety, outoor recreation, chainsaw, stove operation, generator operation, snow machine, sexual assault / harassment prevention training... you name it, they've done it! All of our equipment is staged and ready to be loaded on flights. Our first chance at putting in camp begins November 17, so by the time you are reading this the camp may be established. The team is working to quickly get the Eclipse ice core drill set up and drilling as soon as possible, recovering a core to bedrock in the "Cul de Sac." The next COLDEX team, I-185 airborne geophysics, gets underway next week!
